What does "bioclimatic" mean?
A bioclimatic pergola has a roof of individual rotating louvre blades — not a fabric canopy that rolls or slides. Each louvre can be angled independently, letting you control the exact balance of sun, shade, and airflow beneath. Close them fully for shelter, open them to 90° for an open-air feel, or set them at 45° to filter the afternoon glare without blocking the breeze. How does the louvre roof actually work?
The seven roof panels are connected by a single central rod that runs along one side of the frame. Pushing or pulling the rod rotates all seven louvres together, moving them from fully horizontal (closed, maximum shade and rain protection) through any intermediate angle to fully vertical (fully open, open sky). You adjust it by hand — no cranks, no remotes, no mechanism to maintain. One motion changes the entire roof.
Is it weatherproof? Can it handle South African rain?
The louvres are PA-coated and water-repellent — light to moderate rain beads off the closed louvres effectively. For heavy rain, we recommend angling the louvres slightly (rather than fully horizontal) so water drains off to the sides rather than sitting on the fabric. The RoyalPatio is not designed for use in severe weather — strong wind, storms, or hail. In these conditions, close the louvres fully and consider adding temporary guy ropes or weight bags for additional stability. This is standard guidance for all fabric pergola structures.
Why aluminium over steel — is it actually stronger?
Aluminium is not stronger than steel by weight, but it's naturally rust-proof — no coating required to protect it from moisture. In South African outdoor conditions (high UV, variable humidity, occasional coastal salt air), this makes a meaningful long-term difference. The 60×60mm section is also a heavier gauge than the 50mm steel used in the other pergolas in this range, so the overall rigidity is comparable or better despite the material difference.
How many people and how long does assembly take?
Two people minimum — the frame arrives in two boxes totalling 49kg, and aligning the leg poles while connecting the cross beams is significantly easier with two. Allow 3–5 hours for a careful assembly. The Allen key and full hardware set are included. The louvre panels slot into the top frame and connect to the control rod as one of the final assembly steps.
How long does delivery take, and does it arrive in one or two boxes?
Free delivery nationwide across South Africa within 3-5 working days. The RoyalPatio ships in two boxes (Box 1: 289×22×14.5cm at 29kg; Box 2: 232×15×18cm at 20kg). Both boxes will be delivered together. Ensure someone is available to receive — this is a large, heavy two-box consignment and may require two people to move from the delivery point.
